How are Torfaen Schools Addressing Healthy Eating:

  • All Torfaen Schools participate in the Healthy Schools Scheme
  • Encouraging a whole school/cross curricular approach to healthy eating
  • The setting up of fruit tuck shops
  • The uptake of Key Stage 1 free school milk
  • Raising awareness of benefits of drinking water throughout the school day
  • Breakfast provision
  • Ensuring that schools are making links with outside agencies that can provide alternative and dynamic educational experiences relating to nutrition and health
  • The formation of School Nutrition Action Groups to ensure that there are pupil consultation decisions made about food and health
  • Promote regular physical activity as a protective measure against a range of health conditions, including obesity
  • Developing healthy schools action plans that feed into the Schools Improvement Plan
  • Several schools are involved in healthy schools days
  • Schools aim to make pupils, teachers, parents and communities more aware of the opportunities that exist in schools for promoting healthy eating
