Children’s Community Dietitian, Jocelyne Jones, as been appointed to work out of the Cwmbran Integrated Children’s Centre in collaboration with the Flying Start and Sure Start teams. A major part of her work over the next 3 years is to manage and deliver the MEND 2-4 and MEND 7- 13 Programmes in Torfaen.
The family oriented MEND programmes are FREE with an emphasis on fun fitness, obesity and heart disease prevention.
MEND 2-4
The MEND 2-4 programme is aimed at promoting good early years nutrition and preventing obesity. It delivers a combination of active and creative play, food exposure techniques and parent/carer workshops on healthy lifestyle topics including fussy eating and games to improve agility, co-ordination and self confidence.
Each programme has a weekly 1.5 hour session for 10 weeks. Parents or carers need to attend the sessions, which are run in school hours, with the children.

MEND 7-13
This programme targets children who are overweight or obese (with a BMI over the 91st centile for their age). It offers families a non-threatening approach to weight management and lifestyle changes. It provides 2 hours of physical activity per week in a safe and fun setting.
Each programme comprises of 20x2 hours after-school group sessions over 10 weeks:

1 hour of fun education for children – nutrition and motivation skills

1 hour of exercise for children

1 hour of motivational or further nutritional training for parents.
