Smoking is the single greatest cause of preventable illness and premature death in the UK.
Just over a quarter - 26 per cent - of adults in Wales are smokers. But 27 per cent of adults in Wales are ex-smokers.
Giving up smoking is not easy. In fact, it is a tremendous personal achievement. But the benefits of doing so are enormous.
In 2002/03, 26% of adults aged 16 and over in Great Britain were cigarette smokers. Torfaen has the second highest percentage of adults (18-64 years) smoking of any unitary authority in Wales: 35% to the Welsh average of 30.5%. Half of all teenagers who are currently smoking will die from diseases caused by tobacco if they continue to smoke.
